Geek Girls is a club at Singapore American School that strives to increase women participation and interest in STEM-related fields. Women systemically have been suppressed from liking and enjoying STEM professions, and because of this, girls from a young age are predisposed to ignore what STEM has to offer. Because of this, we felt the need to create a community where all people, women, men, and non-binary individuals can come and feel accepted with others of the same interests.
What We Do!
At Geek Girls, we do a multitude of things for the interests of all people! We conduct experiments, like a Rube Goldberg Machine, or a Copper II Sulfate reaction, or biology experiments, to reach all people and peak their excitement. We also conducted a webinar, with Nobel Laureate Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn and venture capitalist Ms. Sui Ling, to get their perspective on what it is to be a woman in a powerful position, and what the journey was like to get there. We learned so much from their experience and words of wisdom, and I know everyone who watched the webinar took something from it as well. In addition to all of this, we give advice to underclassmen deciding their future courses, and how that may align with a profession they are aspiring to pursue. Overall, Geek Girls is an extremely welcoming atmosphere, and anyone/everyone is welcome to join us! We love our new members and welcome them with open arms.
