Math Club

by Gyulim Jessica Kang

What do you do at Math Club? Just solve math problems for an hour?

These are some common questions we received from nonmembers asking about the club. Of course, Math Club would be pretty boring if all we did was quietly “solve problems for an hour”; thankfully, though, the activities we do at Math Club are much more diverse. In this article, we uncover the shroud of mystery surrounding the club and take a closer look at what goes on every Monday behind the closed doors of H333.

Math Club provides a lively and inclusive environment for students who love math to pursue their interests beyond the classroom. We’re currently one of the largest clubs in SAS with an officer team of six and more than thirty members. Together, we strive to make our activities relevant and engaging for all, regardless of skill level. Math Club is a place where everyone will be able to learn new problem-solving strategies, participate in friendly competitions, participate in tutoring opportunities, and play various games (a club favorite is Ryan’s codebreakers).

These are some of our main activities and events:

  1. Interactive and engaging lessons about mathematical concepts, problem-solving strategies, and practical applications. Many of our members engage in competition math (with several rising stars amongst the freshmen!), so our presentations are often on specific competition math techniques. However, we also discuss various other interesting topics such as construction, Catalan numbers, repeated fractions, the Riemann function (a topic in pure math and also an article in the Math section of this issue), proof techniques (eg. induction), and more.

  2. Friendly mini-competitions within Math Club to test our knowledge and win small prizes. These competitions are themed (in the past, we’ve had themes including but not limited to Valentine’s Day, MUN, and leap year) and emphasize improving our members’ problem-solving skills. Active members can accumulate points and win prizes at the end of the school year!

  3. School-wide competitions. In these competitions, students will employ their mathematical knowledge and problem-solving skills to compete for a grand prize.

  4. Competitive math. Members represent SAS in online math competitions and contests against local school teams.

  5. Tutoring Opportunities. Members can volunteer to tutor students who need help with their respective math courses.

  6. Occasional chill sessions. In these sessions, we just play games, relax, and talk about our mathematical fantasies.

All in all, the doors of our club are always open! We hope this helped you learn more about our club, and feel free to ask any questions that arise to me or any of our other officers.
